In what should have been a night of celebration and music, tragedy struck the Dominican capital. The iconic Jet Set nightclub, a landmark of Santo Domingo’s nightlife, became the scene of a devastating collapse, leaving at least 58 dead and 155 injured. The disaster occurred during a performance by merengue star Rubby Pérez, when the venue’s roof caved in on attendees.

With a capacity of over 1,000 people, approximately 500 were inside at the time of the collapse, deepening shock and grief across Dominican society. Preliminary figures were released by the Emergency Operations Center (COE), which has led rescue efforts since the incident began.

Authorities launched a massive rescue operation involving over 20 coordinated institutions. Heavy machinery, specialized personnel, and canine units are clearing debris to locate trapped victims, with search dogs critical for accessing hard-to-reach areas.

The COE has urged the public to donate blood to aid the injured, many of whom were rushed to hospitals for urgent care.

President Luis Abinader declared three days of national mourning (April 8–10), with flags flown at half-mast at all public and military buildings to honor the victims.

Opened in the 1970s, Jet Set was a cultural and social hub in the Dominican Republic, hosting countless local and international artists. Its collapse marks not only a physical loss but an emotional blow to a city that cherished the venue as a decades-long symbol of joy and entertainment.

The Dominican community now grapples with profound sorrow as rescue operations persist and authorities prepare to support those affected by this unprecedented tragedy.
